How All Saints is supported financially and how you can help

In modern times, the work and clergy of the Church of England is paid for, almost entirely, by those who worship in our parish churches. Many quote large funds held by the Church Commissioners but, nowadays, this is swallowed up by the clergy pension fund.

It costs £50,000 each year to keep All Saints open. We have to send over £28,000 to the Diocese of Chichester as our contribution to diocesan clergy salaries, administration, housing and training.

This large amount of money comes from relatively few people. Our average weekly attendance, during 2007, was 50 adults and 7 children, with a total membership of only 83. This probably equates to around 70 households, one or more of whom worship at All Saints. So, on average, each household contributes just over £700 each year. Bearing in mind that many are on very low incomes, some families contribute far more than this.

Yet giving to the Church is very far from a burdensome duty - it is an important part of spiritual life and growth. It is away of saying to God, ‘All that I have comes from you. I’m giving the best of my income as a sign of my trust in You.’ God honours this sort of commitment.

In the Old Testament, God promised that, if His people gave Him the first 10% of their income (a tithe), He would provide more than they needed in return. Many people today still take this seriously.

Giving is, of course, voluntary. No one is forced to give and the amount they give is confidential - not even the Vicar knows!

The Church of England recommends that each person give 10% to God: 5% to their parish church and 5% to there charities. In smaller churches, like All Saints, many would prefer to give all or most of their 10% to All Saints.

Bring the whole tithe
   into the storehouse,
That there may be food in my house,
   and try me in this,
   says the LORD of hosts:
Shall I not open for you
   the floodgates of heaven,
to pour down blessing upon you
   without measure?
Malachi 3:10
